Dr. Jawa is a Board-certified orthopaedic Surgeon, with a specialized focus on total shoulder replacement, including both reverse and anatomic total shoulder arthroplasty surgery. His clinical practice is based at New England Baptist Hospital and a local outpatient surgery centre, where he is renowned for his expertise and innovation in shoulder arthroplasty, earning international recognition in the field.
Dr. Jawa's academic foundation was established at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, followed by a residency at Harvard Combined Orthopaedic Residency. He further specialized through fellowships at Massachusetts General Hospital, focusing on Hand and Microsurgery and Shoulder and Elbow Surgery, respectively.
He is the chief of shoulder arthroplasty at New England Baptist Hospital and the head of the shoulder section of the New England Shoulder and Elbow Society. His affiliation as an associate professor at Tufts University School of Medicine, along with faculty positions in the Harvard Shoulder Fellowship Program, the New England Baptist Sports Fellowship, and the Tufts Orthopaedic Residency programs, reflect his dedication to education and mentorship.
Dr. Jawa's scholarly contributions include over 80 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters. He is a sought-after speaker at national conferences and serves as an Associate Editor for the Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery, further evidencing his commitment to the dissemination of knowledge and best practices in shoulder and elbow surgery
An active member of the American Shoulder and Elbow Society (ASES) and the Association of Clinical Elbow and Shoulder Surgeons (ACESS), Dr. Jawa also leads the Complications of RSA Research group within ASES, focusing on identifying the causes of major complications following reverse shoulder arthroplasty (RSA).
Born and raised in Korea, Dr. Yoo attended high school and college in the United States, where he is called Joe.
He completed his undergraduate work at Northwestern University in 1989. Returning home, he entered Korea University School of Medicine in Seoul, graduating in 1994 and staying on for his internship.
After 3 years of service as a medical officer and public health administrator in the Korean Navy, Joe completed his residency in orthopaedics at Korea University Hospital and his fellowship in arthroscopy and sports medicine at the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Samsung Seoul Hospital, Sungkyunkwan University.
Dr. Yoo's teaching career in shoulder and knee arthroscopy and sports medicine began in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Eulji University, as an instructor.
In 2005 he was appointed Assistant Professor in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Sungkyunkwan University, School of Medicine, Samsung Medical Center, in Seoul.
He has been awarded traveling fellowships by the ASES and ESSKA, has served as a reviewer for Arthroscopy since 2004, and was named to our Editorial Board in 2006. He is the author of numerous articles published in the Korean as well as the American and European literature. He is an active member of numerous professional associations, including KOA, KSES, KAA, ISAKOS, ESSKA, AANA, and Magellan Society.
He is currently a full time professor, is the past president of Korean Shoulder and Elbow Society and the past vice president of Korean Sports Medicine Society.
