Prof Henk Coert

Prof. Henk Coert is a plastic surgeon dedicated to the care of hand, wrist and peripheral nerve problems. After his residency, he obtained an ACGME accredited add-on qualification in hand surgery at the NYU and Mount Sinai Medical Centres in New York City.

His current position is professor and chairman of the Department of Plastic Surgery and Hand Surgery at the UMC Utrecht.

He has served as president of the Netherlands Society for Surgery of the Hand, as Editor of the Journal of Hand Surgery (European Volume) and as the council and program chair of the American Society of Peripheral Nerve. Currently, he is Vice Secretary General of the International Wrist Arthroscopy Society (IWAS) and the President of this year’s European hand surgery congress (FESSH). He served as member of the editorial board of three peer reviewed journals.

He has published around 175 peer reviewed articles, two books and several book chapters. Besides his clinical work and research, he values teaching very much demonstrated by his involvement in numerous courses nationally and internationally.


Karen Smith
New Zealand


Karen is a New Zealand Orthopaedic surgeon; her formulative training in Hand Surgery was with Michael Tonkin at the Royal North Shore Hospital Hand Fellowship in Sydney. She has had  a long and fruitful career in Hand and Wrist surgery for over 30 years in public and private practice, during which she was the prime mover and constant protagonist in the development and growth of the Combined Orthoplastic Hand Unit at Middlemore Hospital in Auckland. Her interests now, are Hand Surgery in the public sector and particularly teaching.

Outside of work, Karen enjoy traveling and hiking, good food and wine, books, music and the theatre, and most of all,  family and friends.
