Michael graduated in 1988 from Otago University, New Zealand with a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery, and a Bachelor of Science. After house surgeon years he spent time as a GP and then 6 months in Kenya as a doctor/surgeon in a rural mission hospital. Michael undertook a fellowship year  in Cardiff, training in both reconstruction with the late Tim Stephenson and then pelvic cancer surgery. with professor Kynaston.  Main initial interest has been open prostate surgery, prostate biopsies and active surveillance. Observerships at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Centre and the Mayo clinic Rochester for prostate surgery, The  AMC in Amsterdam and the Charite in Berlin for work on prostate biopsies.  Received the Keith Kirkland prize for research on TUVP and the BAUS prize on 2 occasions for work related to prostate biopsies. Subsequently main interest has centred more on penile cancer with a brief observership at the penile cancer unit in the Antoni van Leewenhoel hospital ,Amsterdam .He now  looks after penile cancer referrals from the central North Island of NZ covering Taranaki to Gisborne and places in between.Married with 4 children and 2 grandchildren he has spent his entire consultant life in the Waikato but still remains a Highlander at heart.

Matthew is a urologist and robotic surgeon at RBWH & STARS with academic appointment as Associate Professor at the University of Queensland and Clinician Research Fellow at Metro North Health (Qld). He completed his PhD in 2017 investigating biomarkers for prostate cancer and now researches on novel imaging and biomarkers, clinical trials and innovation in urology. He has authored over 170 peer reviewed manuscripts in international journals and presented research at more than 20 international urology and clinical cancer meetings. He is a member of the EAU Prostate Cancer Guidelines Committee, Prostate Cancer Outcomes Registry (PCOR)-Queensland Steering Committee and was Co-Convenor of the ANZUP 2024 ASM.
