Professor Max Haerle - Germany

Professor Haerle carried out his medical and surgical training in Italy, France and Germany. He has started training with Giorgio Brunelli, then continued training with the French Hand Group around Alain Gilbert and Tubiana. He then moved to the University of Hannover (Alfred Berger) and then to the University of Tübingen to complete training in Plastic surgery and in Hand surgery as well.

He now heads the Plastic and Hand Surgery Department of the Orthopaedic Clinic in Markgröningen in Germany (Stuttgart). He is also an assistant professor (venia legendi) in plastic surgery at the E.K. University Tübingen.  Professor Haerle is a Council member of the German Hand Society (DGH) and was one of three Congress Presidents of IFSSH meeting in Berlin 2019.

Professor Haerle is Past President of the European Society for Wrist Arthroscopy (EWAS) and past General Secretary of FESSH (Federation of European Societies for Surgery of the Hand). He is actually the Secretary General of IWAS (International Society for Wrist Arthroscopy)


Dr Eva-Maria Baur - Germany

Born 1963, studied in Heidelberg/Mannheim, state examinations in 1992. Her training in surgery was from 1992to 1998 at the Kreis Hospital in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. She gained her title as specialist in surgery in 1999.

From 1998 to 2003 she worked at the BG Hospital in Murnau in the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Microsurgery and HandSurgery led by Dr A Schmidt. In the same period, she also worked in plastic surgery at the treatment centre in Vogtareuth led by Prof A M Feller and at the DRK Clinic in Baden-Baden in the Department of Hand Surgery led by Prof P Haussmann. 

In 2003 she gained her specialist title in plastic surgery and went back to Prof Hausmann in Baden-Baden as Senior Consultant Surgeon. At the end of 2004 she went as Senior Consultant Surgeon to the University Clinic for Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery led by Prof H Piza in Innsbrück. In 2005 she gained an additional specialist title in hand surgery and the new specialist recognition for plastic and aesthetic surgery as well as the European Diploma in Hand Surgery. 

In addition, she also has a further title in emergency medicine and qualifications in diving and hyperbaric medicine. She is actively involved with INTERPLAST – Germany and did humanitarian work in India in 2003 and 2005.


Dr Paco del Piñal - Spain

Born in Santander, northern Spain, in 1960, Dr Francisco del Piñal is considered one of the world’s best hand surgeons. His contributions in the fields of microsurgical toe to hand transfer or arthroscopic surgery techniques on wrist fractures are endorsed and used internationally. 

After an intense professional experience in Australia and the United States, he returned to his homeland in 1992 to found the Instituto de Cirugía Plástica y de la Mano (Institute of Plastic and Hand Surgery), which he runs today along with the unit of Hand-Wrist and Plastic-Reconstructive Surgery at Hospital Mutua Montañesa.

Del Piñal, ex-president and ex-secretary General of the European Wrist Arthroscopy Association (now International Wrist Arthroscopy Society, IWAS), has a career marked by numerous awards and notable participations in medical events with global reach. Dr del Piñal has been principal guest professor at the Curtis National Hand Center of the University of Baltimore(USA) and the first Spanish surgeon to take part in the Annual Meeting of the Japanese Orthopaedic Association. He has also occupied the honorary chair Harold E. Joseph E. Kleinert-Kutz of the University of Louisville (USA).


Dr PC Ho - Hong Kong

Dr PC Ho graduated from the University of Hong Kong in 1987. Dr Ho is currently the Chief of Service of the Department of Orthopaedics & Traumatology in Prince of Wales Hospital, as well as the Clinical Professor (honorary)of the Faculty of Medicine at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. His main research interest is on Hand & Wrist Arthroscopic Surgery. Others include congenital hand differences, rheumatoid hand, paralytic hand reconstruction and microsurgery. Dr Ho was the President of the Hong Kong Society for Surgery of the Hand in 2008-2010. In 2012, he was awarded the Whipple Prize for recognition of his distinguished contribution in wrist arthroscopic surgery. In 2015 he was appointed as the President of the European Wrist Arthroscopy Society (EWAS) (2015-2016) as well as the Founding President of the Asia Pacific Wrist Association (APWA) (2015-2017). 

His academic honors included: Overseas Visiting Expert in Orthopaedic Surgery to Singapore in 2012, Moberg Lecturer at the 24th Scandinavian Hand Society Meeting in 2012, Robert A. Chase Visiting Professor to the Stanford University in 2014, Joshi Oration for the Indian Hand Surgery Society in 2015, Invited Lecturer to the 88th Annual Meeting of the Japanese Orthopaedic Association in 2015, Honored Professor to the Philadelphia Hand Rehabilitation Foundation in 2017, Plenary Speaker of 11th APFSSH Congress 2017 in Cebu and as the keynote speaker in numerous national hand surgery and orthopaedic societies including Singapore, Japan, Korea, China, Indonesia, Philippines, Taiwan, Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, India, Australia, Argentina, USA, France, Romania, Poland, Estonia and Germany since 2002. He has made 120 publications (73 in wrist surgery), conducted111 cadaveric courses in 23 international centers, and delivered 127 local & 559 international lectures in 96 cities of 37 countries worldwide. He is the director of the Hong Kong International Wrist Arthroscopy Workshop and Seminar since 2008.
